Ephraim Avenue, Camden, New Jersey An undated postcard published by Universal School Products Co., 104 Fifth Avenue, New York City Last Revised: 07 July 2009 New photos in the SJHS Scrapbook . Former Fairview residents - visit my Yorkship site and the Yahoo Yorkship Group ! The Salt Lick was the first St. Joe’s alumni page on the Web, and has been online since 1996! Why "Memorial"? Because there’s nothing left but memorieswith the neighborhood aging, white flight underway, and the city crumbling around it, an urban Catholic school could not compete with suburban alternatives, and the doors were closed forever. Why "Free Range"? Because the Bison herd, freed from its academic feedlot, scattered to the far corners of the contiguous States, and beyond. Why "Salt Lick"? Because a salt lick is a gathering place, a crossroads. Why these pages? Because we live in a time and place where mobility has nearly destroyed our natural tribes, so we must invent replacementschurch, political party, alma mater. Because we’re the custodians of little pieces of each others’ past, in the form of our memories of each other, and of shared times. Because the poignant intensity of the transition from child to adult perversely keeps those years more vivid in our minds and hearts than much of the "real life" that followed. Because humans are curious about the road not taken, about how chance interacts with choice to carry some of us to triumph and others to tragedycurious about the lives of those who were our companions at the beginning of the journey. In other wordswhy not? This site is decidedly NOT approved, reviewed, supported, sanctioned, blessed, or authorized by the Diocese of Camden or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. It belongs to us, the alumni, and we can speak as freely here as we choose. I loved my time at St. Joe’s, but I don’t have blinders on. Not everyone remembers high school fondly, and we don’t have to pretend that St. Joe’s was the best of all possible worlds for everyone. And, really, aren’t we all old enough now that we can stop worrying about fitting in?Michael P. Excerpts from the Impressions and other archaeological finds. St. Joe’s Church Appeal St. Joe’s alumnus Rev. Edward J. Lipinski, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church, is leading a fund-raising drive to repair and restore the church building at 10th and Liberty. The church has won designation as a state historic site, and a matching funds state grant from the New Jersey Preservation Trust. But the church must raise nearly half a million dollars for its share of the restoration cost. Please read Fr. Lipinski’s appeal on the excellent St. Joseph’s Polish Church history site, and help if you can.
